Some Before and Afters

This client contacted me looking to have his 36 gallon bow front aquarium cleaned before the holidays. After an extended time of several months with a light to nutrient imbalance and minimal cleaning the tank was filled with hard green spot algae, excessive amounts of mulm, and large masses of decaying root and plant matter leaching ammonia into the tank. An appointment was quickly and easily scheduled via text.Upon arrival I immediately conducted water tests and discovered what I call "old tank syndrome." (Thriving fish in water with little to no alkalinity and sky high nitrate levels.) The flora, fauna, and natural minerals present in the tank slowly affect the water over long periods of time without water changes. I proceeded to chemically neutralize the nitrates and tackle the algae problem.Green spot algae is normally scraped off with a razor blade, however because the tank had a bowfront it had to be tackled with a good sponge and whole lot of elbow grease. After removing all the algae I trimmed any plant matter that was being out-competed by algae, carefully shook all the mulm and debris out of the enormous mass of thriving java moss and thoroughly gravel vacuumed the whole tank. afterwards i cleaned all of the equipment and air lines in the aquarium, performed a large water change to reduce nitrates and remineralize the water column, and added water conditioner and water polisher to filter out any floating debris.

This customer mostly just wanted to pick my brain. He had a wide variety of questions.
How are my water parameters? What can I do about these fish bothering each other? How would you decorate this tank? What types of fish can I add?
He has a 37 gallon tall cube with remarkably low algae. Cubes are tricky to scape in a visually appealing way, especially when they're too tall to easily reach the bottom of the tank. After testing the water i gravel vacuumed, detoxified nitrates, and we explored tank decoration arrangements that were both more visually striking as well as provide more hiding and exploring space for fish that had been pestering each other. Before concluding the visit I advised some regular water changes and exploring options for fish that'll fill the top of the water column, like pencil fish or kilifish.

I had so much fun working on this tank. I had a blast chatting with the owners. They also had an adorable pair of Bassett hounds that I got to hang out with while I worked on the tank. This customer gad a 75 gallon aquarium 2 lights, 2 hang on back penguin filters, and a serious green water algae problem.Green water Algae is typically caused by a seriously excessive amount of light, especially natural sunlight. In the case of this tank, the lights were too bright and left on for much too long. Initial water tests showed a lack of alkalinity and well as a slightly elevated nitrate level.I began treating this tank by removing anything with large amounts of algae build up. The lids, the covers and intake for the filters, and tubing lines were all covered in slimy green algae. After cleaning the equipment, I performed a 50% water change and gravel vacuumed. I finished up the first visit by wrapping the tank in blackout fabric, turning off the lights and dosing an algaecide.
After 2 more short visits to do water changes and gravel vacuuming, the tank was looking good as new.
